Grand March - A Texas Tradition

It is an old tradition to begin the evening dancing the Grand March. This is led by a couple that is helping to carry on an old wedding tradition. This dance symbolizes what the couple will endure during their marriage.

With the bride and groom, the wedding party, and the guests following behind the lead couple, the dancers form several formations. They dance around the room in a circle, which signifies life. Dancers face each other and join hands to form a bridge. This signifies the bridges that must be built in life. Dancers return to single file, forming a snake that signifies the twist and turns of life.

The couple’s separate, signifying the first quarrel, then come back together to show making up. Couples join together in formation of four or more, signifying the growth of the family. The bride and groom dance together as the other dancers form a circle around them signifying the support of family.
